The research project ”From Central Space to Urban Place” was organised in three sub-projects that were processed in independent but mutually related teams:
- Centrality and central spaces in the landscape. Data collection and primary analyses as well as landscape analyses including prerequisites for navigation and communication.
- Central space, town, and hinterland – structure, interaction, and specialisation. This dealt with the empirical base data from sub-project 1 in order to conduct a diachronic analysis of organisation, interaction, and hierarchy between the central spaces. The sub-project focused on three themes: buildings and professions, the military organisation and expression of power, as well as cult and religion. Each of these was crucial for the centralisation of power in the period.
