TV 2 – A National Media in the Provinces

The decision to place TV 2/Danmark in the provinces in 1988 had both symbolic and practical implications, of which this project examines the background and impact. Here, two subject areas are combined with an issue that is relevant to both recent local history and Danish media history. As a national television station, TV 2, through its location and editorial line, has had a significant impact on the perception of the relationship between the capital and the provinces, similar to how the television station, as an attractive state workplace in the creative industry, held significant potential for the development of a larger provincial town.

TV2

The study is based on three different levels of TV 2’s history:

  • On a political level – the decision to locate TV 2 in the province is examined. According to the policy makers, what could TV 2 convey to the provinces, and what could the provinces convey to TV 2?
  • The media level – specifically how the television station interpreted and weighted the local, regional, provincial and national frameworks in which it had been placed.
  • Last but not least, the place-bound level – what did it mean for Odense be the home for TV 2? Even such an ethereal medium as television is not produced freely floating, it is tied to the place – city, region, nation – where it is produced.
